Job Description:

The Compliance Officer oversees all the credit union’s compliance operations across the various departments including lending, accounting and teller operations. The compliance officer works with management, employees and government regulatory authorities to ensure that institutional activities are in compliance with co-operative and financial laws. An emphasis is placed on providing accurate and timely reports to management and external regulators to improve credit union business results and comply with financial laws.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The compliance officer overlooks the credit union’s lending, accounting and customer service operations to ensure compliance with cooperative and financial laws.
  • Evaluate the credit union’s policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Make recommendations for change where applicable.
  • Monitors new developments in financial regulations and keep credit union personnel appraised on recent updates.
  • Ensure that any change in policies or proceduresare communicated to impacted departments, or the credit union as a whole, with clarity. Follow up to ensure new procedures are understood and implemented.
  • Disseminate information, answer questions and be a subject matter expert for the credit union on all compliance-related issues
  • Acts as the Quality Assurance Officer in conducting compliance reviews and present a summary report to management.
    • Conducts 100% post loan review on approved loans.
    • Assist in the verification of all new member applications
    • Review all AML forms and ensure AML guidelines are followed
    • Review accounting postings and transactions including salary & stipend payments, account payables & receivables and ML & GL postings.
  • Develop or assist in the development of compliance training programs for credit union staff.
  • Assist compliance examiners with their examinations, making available information that is necessary to complete their audits
  • Develop and implement corrective action procedures as necessary to ensure compliance with policies and procedures and to avoid future compliance problems.

  • Inform credit union leaders of regulatory changes and trends, and how they may affect business operations.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Knowledge of all applicable cooperative policies, procedures, laws and regulations related to credit union operations
  • Knowledge and experience in lending, AML, compliance and accounting.
  • Ability to create and implement policies and process improvement.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Skills in managing risk for the organization.
  • Strong administrative and operational skills.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience working within Banking/Financial services with experience in the lending, compliance, AML and or accounting.

Education and Training:

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent qualifications in management, law or finance
  • Certification in Compliance
  • A minimum of two years as a compliance officer. Familiarity with operational, financial, quality assurance and lending policies and procedures.
  • Any suitable combination of experience and qualifications will be considered.
